Sweet Caroline's

A reader recently suggested I try Sweet Caroline's Candy Shop in Overland Park for my latest sugar craving (as if I needed a reason!). 

For the last seven years Caroline, the owner, has been making specialty fudge, chocolates and caramel apples. Although I was tempted by rows of chocolate covered Oreos, cookie dough fudge, and other goodness I was on a mission to try a Caroline's Texas-size caramel apple. There were several to choose from...

From left to right: the Reese's Pieces caramel apple, the dark chocolate peanut caramel apple and the pretzel white chocolate caramel apple. I wasn't going for frills or fuss, however, I needed to get down to business with the basics....the chocolate covered caramel apple. 

Caroline dunks the apple in a dark caramel that has a slight toffee flavor. Instead of using milk chocolate she goes for dark chocolate to "bring out the sweetness of the caramel." The apple was finished off with a few stripes of white chocolate and by that point I was ready to jump across the counter and inhale every last bit of it. But, I waited patiently until I got home (never mind that I sprinted like a crazy person up the stairs to my apartment,  tripping and almost losing my beloved treat).  

You guys are lucky I even got a picture, seriously. 

Although it was delicious, the price of Sweet Caroline's caramel apples is steep. About $10 an apple. And no knock on sweet little Caroline but you can get a comparable caramel apple at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory for much less. It's nice to support local business though...so I'll probably be back at some point for that white chocolate pretzel apple.
